Is the name of Edwin Sánchez’s first solo exhibition in Valenzuela Klenner Gallery. The exhibition is composed of a series of works extracted from the experience and immersion in specific contexts of the historic and actual reality of the country, exposing the public to a strong reflection of contents meticulously chosen.
Each work makes reference (in some cases ironically or cynically) to different artistic mediums like drawing, sculpture, video and performance. Nonetheless, its realization distances the spectator from an esthetic appreciation by inducing a moral and ethical confrontation provoking contradictory feelings of attraction and repulsion. Such is the case in the work “ Insertion in an Ideological Circuit” in which Sanchez addresses directly the project of Brazilian artist Cildo Meireles. In spite of the direct allusion to this artist’s work, in this case the object, medium for the insertion/circulation, is not a bottle or a bill, it’s a hand gun.
Edwin Sánchez is one of the most promising artists from the recent generation of Colombian contemporary artists. Proof of this, is his recent invitation to several of the most relevant international exhibitions and artistic events:
He was chosen to be part of the artists directory “Younger than Jesus: Artist Directory” of the New Museum in New York, a very respected publication for its acute vision of the new generation of artists around the world. http://www.newmuseumstore.org/viewItem.aspItemID=10018277&UnitCde=1
Nominated by curator José Roca to the “Project 35” of the Independent Curators International (ICI) – one of the most important international exhibitions nowadays, which will be in itinerancy for a year in different prestigious international museums and institutions. Sanchez was chosen with the video “Knife Lessons”, one of the most unsettling and disturbing works of recent Colombian art. http://www.ici-exhibitions.org/index.php/site/events/pro/
Moreover, he was selected by a group of distinguished international curators, to be part of PILOT:3. A selection of artists, whom according to these curators, are some of the names to keep an eye on. http://www.chelsea.arts.ac.uk/38754.htm
